Is there a press release or anything for that tournament somewhere? Or something more specific than 'Great Britain' for the venue? Don't remember seeing anything about it over here.JohnyK wrote:May 19-22 in Great Britain

According to Latvian NT manager it's in some place called Guildford.

Ah okay, that probably means Surrey Sports Park where we beat the Ukraine in a qualifier last year. Holds about 1,000 and we actually filled it for that game. South-West of London, but takes at least an hour to get out there from the capital, just in case anyone is insane enough to be thinking of coming over here for the games.

Re: Pre-tournament schedule
Even being based in the UK, it is easy for me to get to Riga than Guildford

Looks like there's been a scheduling change and that tournament is going to be in Surrey and will start a day earlier than previously reported.

Re: Pre-tournament schedule
The GB/Latvia/Cuba/Germany tournament got reduced to three days, by the way (19-21). I should be there for most of it, with a bit of luck.

Re: Pre-tournament schedule
That's because Cuba has withdrawn from it (according to Latvian NT manager). Although it says they're trying to find a replacement.

Re: Pre-tournament schedule
Well according to hersey427 on a different forum (presumably the same hersey427 who's also a member here), the reason it's down to three days is that Cuba aren't showing up until the Thursday. Hadn't heard any suggestions elsewhere that they weren't coming at all.

Seems like you were correct and the Latvian manager jumped the gun with making conclusions.

So oddly enough, even after cutting it to three days, we get a 'final' and a 'third-place playoff' tomorrow, because there are two teams at 2-0, and two at 0-2.

Re: Pre-tournament schedule
The way Latvia has played in previous two games judging by the numbers should result in another loss in the third one, too.
With that amount of TO's from our "star PG", she would probably be cut from almost any WNBA training camp.

So at least we snuck one win, although admittedly over a pretty thoroughly mediocre Latvia team. Not very impressed by your girls JohnyK, sorry. They seem relatively organised and everything, just not that much talent on the roster. Babkina made one or two decent plays but nothing that excited me as indicating real WNBA potential.
Not terribly relevant in the EuroBasket section of a European site, but Cuba were surprisingly good even without some of their mainstays from previous tournaments. Their #7, point guard Oyanaisis Gelis Gonzalez, was especially impressive (and looked like she might actually help some WNBA teams).
The new German coach has got them playing solid, organised basketball (far more impressive than when I saw them last year), and they look like they'll be a decent bet to make it through the AQR into the EuroBasket Women finals. Breitreiner didn't play in the last two games after lighting us up in the first one though, and it'll hurt them if she's picked up an injury.
I'll put my GB comments in the GB thread.

To be fair, according to some players afterwards, they couldn't have played worse during those 3 days and I tend to believe them. I'm still pretty positive we'll whoop your asses on June 9.

Re: Pre-tournament schedule
Any chance of online streams for that tournament in Turkey or am I being wildly over-optimistic?

Re: Pre-tournament schedule
The game versus Atlanta Dream becomes more and more a major blowout. Now GB will play 3 games and travel to the other side of the continent with just a day in hand.
Nothing in the Turkish Basketball Federation press release mentioning any of the game being televised. Besides I doubt anyone would want their opponents have an easy way to obtain footage of their new plays and stuff.
